about

Recorded October 2007 at Talking House Productions, San Francisco.

This acoustic version of "My Doe, Part 1" was released digitally previously in March 2008 as the b-side bonus exclusive for the iTunes UK-Europe single, "Salty Eyes," on Epitaph Records. (We appreciate Epitaph allowing this song to surface again, here.)

The song has been re-mastered for this album.

Simon Neil (lead singer of Biffy Clyro) sings backing vocals.

(A very, very rough, full-band demo/rehearsal session recording of "My Doe, Part 1" exists, but it is not a recording the band would like to have circulating.)

"My Doe, Part 1" was written before "Didi (My Doe, Part 2)," track 9 on the Matches' second album, Decomposer. As "Didi" was being written, the words of the chorus of "My Doe" came up as a perfect fit for the bridge of "Didi," meshing both rhythmically and thematically. Those lines were appropriated into "Didi," along with adding the name and titling it "Part 2," while keeping the first "My Doe" in tact for later recording sometime. Lyrics of "Part 1" and "Part 2" do not necessarily tell a continuous story of the same characters, though they might, but they do flow from one to the other in shifting mood and relationship dynamics.

A soft-bound book of poetry and stories written by musicians from indie bands was published in May, 2007, and included a few musicians' illustrations (Revolution on Canvas, Vol. 2, Grand Central Publishing). The contribution from Shawn Harris was lyrics from My Doe (long before the song was recorded) along with a page illustration of Hope straining a rope.

lyrics

My Doe, Part 1 (acoustic)
(Shawn Harris, Miles Hurwitz, the Matches)

By first snow
by first snow my Doe ought to have a ring
Lord, I, I've been saving
but Hope is on a rope, Hope's on a frayed rope
and I can count her ribs
from our kitchenette window
I'm scared and unprepared
she's starting to show

I know
my Doe's a little bit psycho
but she look alright with the lights low
and my Doe wear her head inside out
but my Doe know that I don't mind though

when we found Hope
when we brought home Hope
last of the litter down the way
cloudy eyes cataract grey
we never said but both knew
adopting her meant more than any ceremony
your mama's waiting for

I'm scared and unprepared
she's starting to show
I know ...

my Doe, my dear, my female
she sell retail by the CVS pharmacy store
